Match Point (Max Pages)

Match Point is a drama film which is set in the British city of London. In the first scene we can see a tennis match or training and the image is only set on the net, so we can see how the tennis ball goes from one side of the tennis court to the other side. After a few strokes the ball hits the net and this is one of the most important scenes in all the film, because we don’t know if the ball is going back to one side of the court or if it’s going to pass to the other. During the film we are going to be able to find out the meaning of this image.

Then main characters are Chris Wilton, Nola Rice and Chloe Hewett
• Chris Wilton is a professional tennis player but now the just keeps playing tennis as a trainer. After meeting Chloes he started working for his father in law in a big company.
• Nola Rice is an American actress who came to London and was Tom's fiancée. Tom is Chloe's brother.
• Chloe Hewett is the wife of Chris Wilton, she comes from a very rich family.

• Chris Wilton is a very ambitious person, he prefers money than to love. He is scared of having a normal lifestyle without luxurious apartments, a private driver…
• Nola Rice is like the opposite of Chris, she isn’t as ambitious as Chris is, because she can live alone in a small room, and she prefers love much more than money.
• Chloe Hewett is the typical daughter of a really rich person, she doesn’t care about money because she knows she already has it. She really cares about having children and form a nice family.

This is a summary of the film;
When former tennis pro Chris Wilton begins a relationship with shy heiress Chloe Hewett after befriending her brother Tom, he finds his social and financial status vastly improved. However, once he has an affair with Tom's ex-lover, American actress Nola Rice, he realizes that his new, luxurious lifestyle may be threatened. So Chris formulates a devious plan to rid himself of his inconvenient mistress.

In the film ambition is stronger than love and passion because we can clearly see how Chris Wilton prefers staying with Chloe instead of being with Nola. He loves Nola more than Chloe but he can’t live with her and leave Chloe because his father in law gave him a great job and because otherwise he had to start a new life with no money, no job… and for Chris this is a situation he can’t stand, for this reason he prefers to stay with Chloe and keep on with his lifestyle.

I think that Chris is "the winner of the match" because he has reached what he wanted. His life in the future is going to be a simple and boring routine, every day the same, and all this for many and many years. And he will be unable to forget or ignore what he did to Nola and her neighbor. He’s going to have a perfect lifestyle but he won’t be happy, and happiness is the most important thing in life, if you aren’t happy, your life will be horrible.

I think that another ending could be that the ring fell in the river Thames and for this reason the police wouldn’t have found it in the drug addict's pocket. Then the inspector’s theory would have been true and Chris probably would have gone to jail.

I really liked this film because at the beginning it’s a drama but then it changes completely and it becomes a thriller. I think that Woody Allen did a very good job, and also the main character played an excellent role. The story of the film seems to be a very sweet story between two young people who love each other, but then it turns over completely.
